In a blow to the president’s fragile ego, the West Hollywood City Council voted Monday night to approve a resolution calling for Trump’s star on Hollywood’s “Walk of Fame” to be removed.
Due to the resolution, approved unanimously, the West Hollywood City Council will now send a formal letter to LA Mayor Eric Garcetti (D), the Los Angeles City Council, and the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce, urging them to take action.
“The City Council will consider adopting a resolution urging the Los Angeles City Council and Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to remove President Donald J. Trump’s star from the Hollywood Walk of Fame, due to his disturbing treatment of women and other actions that do not meet the shared values of the City of West Hollywood, the region, state, and country,” the resolution reads.
“Having a ‘star’ on the Walk of Fame is a privilege that is highly sought after by those in the entertainment industry, allowing Mr. Trump to continue to have a star in light of his behavior toward women, particularly in the #timesup and #metoo movements, should not be acceptable in the Hollywood and entertainment industry communities,” the resolution continued.
While the Chamber of Commerce has stated that it would never remove stars over public backlash, the West Hollywood City Council maintains that the stars on the Walk of Fame are the “property of the City of Los Angeles” which has the “ultimate responsibility for the condition and maintenance of the Walk of Fame.” In other words, the Los Angeles City Council could theoretically move to overrule any attempts by the Chamber of Commerce to protect the star.
While Trump publicly signals his disdain for the Democratic stronghold of California, the removal of his star would undoubtedly be a humiliating blow for someone so dependent on the validation of others.
Los Angeles has a rare opportunity to set an example for the rest of the nation that while Trump may think he can act without consequence, his disgusting behavior will no longer continue unchecked.
