Trump campaign veteran leaving White House communications office

- Mei 08, 2018

Another desk is being vacated in the ever-churning White House communications department.

Cliff Sims, a special assistant to the president who oversees White House message strategy, is expected to take a position at the State Department as a senior adviser to Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in the coming weeks.

“Cliff worked on communications for Pompeo’s confirmation and did an outstanding job, which led to Secretary Pompeo offering him that position,” said a person close to Pompeo.

Sims was officially offered the post on Monday and is expected to begin as soon as possible, the source said. The White House press office did not respond to a request for comment on the personnel change.

"The State Department will greatly benefit from Cliff's expertise," Richard Grenell, the new U.S. ambassador to Germany, said in an email.

A Trump campaign veteran, Sims founded the conservative Alabama political blog Yellowhammer News before joining the Trump train. But for more than a year, he has clashed with colleagues who joined the White House from positions at the Republican National Committee, making enemies with the more "establishment" staffers in Trump's factionalized White House.

Even with enemies in senior West Wing roles who tried to push him out, however, Sims managed to survive the snakepit work environment because of a close relationship with the president, who views him as a loyalist.

Since he began working on the confirmation process for Pompeo, Sims has been spotted in his old office in the White House only a handful of times, an aide said. As of early Tuesday afternoon, Sims’ official Twitter account still listed himself as a special assistant to the president and director of White House message strategy, though his White House desk had been cleared out.

Sims declined to comment.
