President Donald Trump on Thursday continued his war against the Washington Post — this time taking issue with its headline-writing and suggesting his own edits.
“The Fake News Washington Post, Amazon’s ‘chief lobbyist,‘ has another (of many) phony headlines, ‘Trump Defiant As China Adds Trade Penalties.‘“ the president tweeted Thursday morning. "WRONG! Should read, ‘Trump Defiant as U.S. Adds Trade Penalties, Will End Barriers And Massive I.P. Theft.‘ Typically bad reporting!"
The tweet comes as Trump continues to bash Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and the Post, which he owns personally. The president has gone as far as suggesting the newspaper should register as a company lobbyist for Amazon.
Throughout the campaign and into his presidency, Trump has had a rocky relationship with some media outlets. The Washington Post article that drew his ire was related to the new tariffs Trump imposed on China, to which Beijing responded with its own barriers to imports of U.S. soybeans, cars, aircraft and chemicals.
The president has insisted he is not starting a trade war. Press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders on Wednesday said the U.S. “may have a little bit of short-term pain, but we're certainly going to have long-term success.“
