West Virginia coal miners just turned on Trump and Republicans in surprising move

- Maret 22, 2018

When West Virginia teachers won a major collective bargaining victory over Republican state politicians earlier this month, they broke the long-held anti-union stranglehold over their state.

Emboldened by labor’s resurgence there, the United Mine Workers of America will endorse two West Virginia Democratic congressional candidates

Tomorrow, the union will endorse Democratic House candidate Richard Ojeda, as well as Democratic Senator Joe Manchin, for their support of issues important to them, including pensions and not imposing strict climate regulations that they feel stand in the way of their industry.

West Virginia coal miners backing Democrats is a canary in the, well, coal mine for Republicans, considering Trump won there by almost 42 points in the 2016 presidential election. The industry has seen few gains, despite Trump’s many campaign promises.

The West Virginia shift toward pro-union Democratic politicians reflects a larger national trend, in which Democrats are winning special elections in deep red districts, as Senator Doug Jones did in Alabama and congressman-elect Conor Lamb did in Pennsylvania’s 18th congressional district.

In November, the midterm elections will test whether recent leftward trends hold up.  If Democrats can flip the House, and possibly the Senate, we can finally impeach the Criminal-in-Chief and his complicit Vice President, promoting a liberal Speaker of the House to the presidency.

Let’s help unions get out the vote, so we can begin the hard work of building toward a more perfect union.
