Chef José Andrés, who fed 3 million Puerto Rican survivors of Hurricane Maria for months, decrying Trump’s callous leadership, is now taking on the National Rifle Association in solidarity with the young Parkland massacre survivors’ March 24 “March for Our Lives,” occurring in Washington D.C. and in sister marches around the country to demand substantial change to America’s reckless gun laws.
José Andrés, who owns ten restaurants, is offering free meals at his own D.C. establishments to protestors next week in a related event called #FoodForOurLives.
On the #FoodForOurLives website, the famed chef enumerates locations for free meal distribution and participating locations offering discounts, saying:
We proudly stand with the students who have come to make their voices heard against gun violence. #FoodForOurLives will provide free or discounted meals on Saturday, March 24 to any student under the age of 18 with a valid ID, while supplies last.
José Andrés, who famously wrote numerous tweets challenging Trump, is now demanding lawmakers heed the cries of our nation’s children and stop kowtowing to the NRA.
Since Parkland, Congress has done nothing to address the gun laws that make American gun deaths far outnumber those in any other wealthy nation.
The White House, meanwhile, has only issued a series of proposals that include training teachers to use firearms, thus enabling gun manufacturers to sell more guns, rather than fewer — a ruse Emma Gonzalez, one of the young March For Our Lives leaders, has correctly called “stupid.”
Other celebrities, including George and Amal Clooney, Oprah Winfrey, and Steven Spielberg and Kate Capshaw, have donated upwards of $500,000 each to support the march. The Clooneys have even promised to march on Washington with the kids.
Last week, school-age children across the country walked out of their elementary, middle, and high schools to protest the lax gun laws that have made the United States the school shooting capital of the world.
Their growing movement may succeed where adults have failed in making schools safe for children to learn. These young people deserve our full-throated and unwavering support.
