President Carter just singled out the “biggest mistake” of Trump’s presidency so far

- Maret 26, 2018

Last week, it was revealed that National Security Advisor H.R. McMaster would be leaving the White House and would be replaced by John Bolton, a former Ambassador to the United Nations under George W. Bush.

The announcement sent a wave of fear sweeping across the world, and understandably so. Bolton is one of the most hawkish figures in American politics and has at numerous times called for the U.S. military to overthrow the governments of Iran and North Korea. He was also one of the architects of the disastrous Iraq War and maintains his support for the invasion even now.

Bolton is the kind of man who seems to relish waging war and displays a ghoulish eagerness to start new ones. In other words, he will be a dangerous, bloodthirsty voice in Trump’s ear and increases the chances that the president will follow through on his worse instincts, instigating a war in order to boost his approval ratings and reinforce his fabricated persona of being a tough guy.

Now, former President Jimmy Carter is stepping forward to denounce Bolton and his warmongering. In a new interview with CBS, Carter called Trump’s new National Security Advisor the “worst mistake” he’s made to date, a meaningful statement given the impressive number of blunders our conman leader has managed to rack up in just over a year in office.

“I have been concerned at some of the things he’s decided. I think his last choice for national security adviser was very ill-advised. I think John Bolton has been the worst mistake he’s made,” said Carter.

President Carter is right to worry about Bolton. The Trump administration has always been an unpredictable, unstable regime, but as the president continues to purge the more (relatively) moderate forces from his White House, the radicals and warmongers grow more influential.

Trump has mused about the possibility of using nuclear weapons in the past, and his repeated use of Iran as rhetorical punching bag make it, if not probable, at least very possible that America could be headed for another horrific armed conflict. Bolton may finally get his new wars.

Media Matters created a video compiling some of Bolton’s scariest statements to date. Check it out below.
