Preet Bharara just responded to Ex-Trump aide Sam Nunberg with a brave wager

- Maret 05, 2018

The interview that former Trump aide Sam Nunberg gave to MSNBC’s Katy Tur is exploding across the internet after Nunberg disclosed not only that he was going to refuse to honor the subpoena that he was served with by Special Counsel Robert Mueller, but that he thinks that Mueller might already have something on the President.

Nunberg claims that he is refusing to honor the subpoena, which requests all of the former aide’s communications with the President’s campaign staff “because what they sent me was absolutely ridiculous.”

“Should I spend 50 hours going over all my emails with [Trump confidant and longtime political operative Roger Stone] and with Steve Bannon?”

Mr. Nunberg had previously told The Washington Post in an interview that he had received a subpoena from Mueller and would refuse to comply.

“Let him arrest me,” Nunberg said. “Mr. Mueller should understand I am not going in on Friday.”

While Nunberg may be willing to spend time in lock up rather than surrender his correspondence, former U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara thinks that the former aide may be risking prison for no reason. In a tweet Bharara put his reputation on the line with a wager that Nunberg should pay close attention to before he decides to defy the Special Counsel.

With every email sitting on both the sender’s and the recipient’s servers, chances are good that most, if not all, of Nunberg’s correspondence with the Trump campaign staff has already been delivered to Mueller’s team in the document production required of the more cooperative witnesses.

Given Bharara’s intimate knowledge of the procedures used by the Justice Department in the prosecution of complex investigations, betting against him in this instance would probably not be too wise.
