Trump thinks he’s saving the world with his latest geopolitical move, but he may actually be walking into a trap.
Trump agreed today to a meeting in person with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, presumably to discuss the de-nuclearization of North Korea. While Trump is hailing the move already as a political win, experts are warning that this could turn bad for him quickly.
Samantha Vinograd, a former senior adviser on the National Security Council under Obama, cautioned Trump against rushing into this meeting.
“There is no way that President Trump can be ready, by May, to have a high stakes negotiation on denuclearization on the Korean Peninsula, it’s just impossible,” she said.
President Obama prepared for months with numerous aides and high level experts going into high stakes diplomatic meetings of this sort.
No doubt, Trump is taking what he sees as an opportunity for some positive PR without thinking through what it actually requires or what the consequences could be.
Vinograd saw right through Trump’s facade and called him out on CNN.
“And guess what? you can’t wing it. Kim Jong Un is going to be fully prepared. I think that he’s playing to the president’s ego and the president’s weaknesses by flattering him,” Vinograd said.
Trump should approach this very carefully, but we all know he won’t.
