Donald Trump blamed Sen. Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) for leaking details of an immigration meeting last week when the president was said to have called certain African nations “shitholes," Reuters reported on Wednesday.
“I’ve lost all trust in Durbin,” Trump said in an interview with Reuters.
Critics said Trump's comments, in which he also said he wanted to encourage more immigration from countries such as Norway, were racist. Durbin has said that after Trump made the "shithole" remarks, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) pushed back against the comments.
Trump shied away from detailing what he said at the closed-door meeting with lawmakers.
“I’m not going to get into what I said, but I will tell you, it was a tough meeting,” he told Reuters.
Trump also told Reuters he was unhappy with an immigration proposal presented by Durbin and Graham, which he said would have been unacceptable to most Republicans. The pair presented a deal that would, in part, help some undocumented immigrants who could lose legal protections after Trump rescinded an Obama-era executive action.
The deal would have been “horrible” for security, Trump said, according to the wire service, and would not have allowed enough funding for construction of a U.S.-Mexico border wall. Trump also said the Durbin-Graham proposal would have been weak in terms of curbing visas for immigrants’ extended family members and did not end a lottery program, both things he wanted to see in an immigration deal.
